About

Meet your tutor

Hi, I'm Britney Hersman — a certified elementary educator with two specializations: K–6 elementary education and math (grades 5–9). I'm currently a virtual 7th grade math teacher and pursuing a master's in educational technology. I've also taught STEAM and coding in a brick-and-mortar classroom for a year and currently run a STEAM club. Before all of this, I spent five years tutoring college students across every subject. Steady Steps Learning LLC is my independent tutoring and homeschool portfolio review practice.

Why Families Choose Steady Steps

Every learner gets a personalized plan built from where they actually are — not where a pacing guide says they should be. Sessions blend discovery-first math instruction, clear progress checkpoints, and social-emotional support, because confidence and skill grow together.

Whether you're using Hope Scholarship funds, paying out of pocket, or need a portfolio review to keep your homeschool compliant, you'll get a plan that's honest about where your student stands and clear about what comes next.

Our Mission

Every Step Fits the Student

Big, one-size-fits-all leaps leave kids behind — not because they can't climb, but because the gap between where they are and what's asked next is too wide. Every child can succeed when the next step is sized to them, not to a pacing guide, a sibling, or the rest of the class. No two students progress at the same pace, and that's not something to fix. It's the whole point of Steady Steps.

Big Jumps

make progress feel impossible and frustrating to students.

Steady Steps

gets students where they need to be with smaller, manageable steps that leave students feeling confident and accomplished.

K–6 Diagnostic & IIP Roadmap

A 1:1 virtual diagnostic (60–90 min) pinpointing your child's exact math and reading/ELA baseline — so daily learning targets exactly what's next, with no redundant review and no frustrating gaps.

  • Dual-subject baseline: math + reading/ELA
  • Professional PDF IIP roadmap in 3–5 business days
  • Supports your required Hope Scholarship IIP

In a traditional classroom, teachers are structurally forced to teach to the middle — bright students re-review mastered concepts while others move forward before they're ready. Customized home education's greatest advantage is instructional efficiency: a precise academic baseline removes the guesswork and the filler.

This diagnostic is a highly engaging, stress-free 1-on-1 session in a secure online video classroom, with built-in brain breaks. It evaluates core number sense, operations, and mathematical reasoning in math, plus phonics, decoding, and reading comprehension in reading/ELA.

You'll receive a polished PDF report recommending specific, evidence-based learning paths, pacing, and methodologies — the exact diagnostic baseline WV Hope families on the IIP pathway need to confidently build their child's required plan. This is structured strictly as an educational assessment, so it's a fully qualifying Hope Scholarship expense. I don't sell curriculum — just objective data for your family's decisions.

How to book: Request the service through the Hope portal (or reach out directly if paying privately). Once approved, I'll send a scheduling link, and you'll receive the full roadmap within 3–5 business days of our session.

5–9 Math Diagnostic & IIP Roadmap

A 1:1 virtual math diagnostic (45–60 min) from a certified Math 5–9 specialist, pinpointing skill gaps before fractions, ratios, and pre-algebra become bigger roadblocks.

  • Professional PDF IIP math roadmap in 3–5 business days

Middle school math is where many students hit a wall — as math shifts from concrete arithmetic to abstract concepts like fractions, ratios, and pre-algebra, even minor gaps can turn into major roadblocks. Standard pre-packaged curricula often add hours of redundant review on skills already mastered, leading to boredom and math fatigue.

Working 1-on-1 virtually, I find your student's "sweet spot" — the exact skills they need to master next. The session (45–60 min) focuses on critical upper-elementary and middle-grades concepts: decimals, fractions, integers, and early algebraic thinking, with an in-depth look at problem-solving strategies to locate hidden gaps.

You'll receive a polished PDF report mapping your child's exact mathematical profile, recommending specific, evidence-based math programs, pacing, and methodologies. This supports the diagnostic data WV Hope families need for their required math IIP, and qualifies as a fully covered educational assessment. I don't sell curriculum — just an objective read on where your student stands.

How to book: Request the service through the Hope portal (or reach out directly if paying privately). Once approved, I'll send a scheduling link, and you'll receive the full math roadmap within 3–5 business days of our session.
